Born from jets or Bjorn from Detroit? The 2008 Saab 9-7X is a capable and fairly well-disguised GM midsize sport-utility. But given other segment choices, we suspect that even Saab enthusiasts will think twice before putting this SUV in their driveways.

Saab introduced its first-ever SUV three years ago in an attempt to jump on the sport-utility bandwagon and diversify its model lineup. To do so, it took the quick and easy route by basing the 9-7X on parent company General Motors' existing midsize SUV platform. The result was a premium-priced, Swedish-themed sport-utility that nonetheless had much in common with the Chevy Trailblazer and GMC Envoy.

Like its siblings, the 2008 Saab 9-7X is a midsize SUV with truck-based, body-on-frame design. It's differentiated through recalibrated suspension tuning and Saab-styled interior and exterior tweaks. Saab's sport-utility also features smoother sculpting led by its signature three-port grille and cleanly styled headlamps, giving the 9-7X a simple yet sophisticated European flavor.

Unlike other Saabs past or present, however, the 9-7X isn't powered by a small, high-revving turbocharged engine. Instead, it uses large-displacement American-style power to better cope with its truck-based mass. Most 9-7Xs are equipped with either a 4.2-liter inline-6 or a slightly less thrifty but more torquey 5.3-liter V8. The new driver-oriented, low-volume 9-7X Aero model shoehorns a muscular and much more enthusiastic 390-hp 6.0-liter V8 under its hood. Other Aero go-fast goodies include a limited-slip rear differential and a more responsive lowered chassis with larger stabilizer bars and heavy-duty brakes with larger calipers and high-performance linings.

Though the 2008 Saab 9-7X has a few things to recommend it, in the final analysis it doesn't possess enough uniquely Saab qualities to compensate for its lofty price tag. Its upgrades over more ordinary GM midsizers are welcome to be sure, but don't go far enough in masking garden-variety domestic roots that date back to 2002. The 9-7X also competes in the hotly contested premium SUV segment against other popular, well-turned-out vehicles like the Acura MDX, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Volvo XC90 and VW Touareg 2, all of which offer a full complement of safety and luxury features as well as finely engineered performance. Unless your SUV simply must be a Saab, we advise you to consider your other options first.

The 2008 Saab 9-7X is a premium midsize SUV that seats five and comes in three main trim levels: the 4.2i, the 5.3i and the limited-production high-performance Aero. Standard equipment on the 4.2i includes 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, faux wood trim, eight-way power-adjustable/heated front seats with driver memory, a sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, OnStar communications, satellite radio and MP3-compatible Bose audio with an in-dash CD changer. The 5.3i model includes V8 power, power-adjustable pedals, xenon HID headlamps with washers and specific aluminum wheels.

The range-topping Aero is further differentiated with more V8 power, a performance-tuned chassis, 20-inch wheels and speed-rated tires, unique Carbon Flash charcoal metallic paint, "Aero" embroidered leather seats and embossed floor mats.

Optional 9-7X equipment includes a navigation system, rear-seat DVD entertainment and polished aluminum wheels.

All 9-7Xs are powered by GM-sourced engines, driving through a four-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel-drive system. The 4.2i model features a 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder good for 285 hp and 276 pound-feet of torque. The 5.3i comes equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine putting out 300 hp and 321 lb-ft of torque. The performance-minded Aero comes with a 6.0-liter V8 cranking out 390 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity, when properly equipped, is rated at 5,500 pounds for the six-cylinder 4.2i and 6,500 pounds for the V8-powered 5.3. EPA-estimated fuel economy for 2008 reflects what might be expected from a nearly 5,000-pound, large-displacement SUV: 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway from the 4.2-liter six-cylinder and 13/19 mpg for the smaller V8.

The 2008 Saab 9-7X comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front seat side-impact airbags, full-length head curtain airbags and OnStar communications with turn-by-turn navigation. In the government's frontal crash test, the 9-7X received an unimpressive three stars out of five for driver protection and a slightly better four-star rating for front passenger protection. Saab's SUV performed very well in the government's side-impact testing, receiving five stars out of five for both front and rear occupants.

In a valiant attempt to elevate the 9-7X's handling prowess and coax a bit more Euro-style road feel from its truck-based chassis, Saab engineers stiffened the 9-7X's frame and recalibrated its A-arm front suspension and solid rear axle arrangement. The surgery was a qualified success, as the 2008 Saab 9-7X does indeed have a more stable ride and more responsive handling than any of its GM cousins. Apparently there was only so much Saab's surgeons could do, however, as less expensive run-of-the-mill SUVs like the Explorer and 4Runner still outclass the 9-7X in driving dynamics. Brake feel also remains a sore point, as the pedal lacks the progressive and confident response associated with a premium vehicle. And while there's no arguing with the power of the standard inline-6 or optional V8 engines, we find they don't offer the refined operation of those found in many of the 9-7X's imported competitors.

Drivers who have piloted other Saabs and don't look too closely will feel comfortable behind the wheel of the 9-7X. The center-mounted ignition and cockpit-inspired design are instantly recognizable Saab brand items, and the faux wood dash accents and contrasting upholstery trim impart additional Scandinavian design school cues. However, eagle-eyed aficionados will be able to look past these elements and recognize the vehicle's GM underpinnings -- which tend to cheapen the Saab 9-7X next to stylishly sophisticated rivals like the Touareg and XC90. Cargo capacity measures nearly 40 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and up to 80 cubic feet total -- about average for this segment.

Unlike the scores of increasingly popular car-based SUVs, truck-based SUVs like the Saab 9-7X still struggle to combine a smooth ride with confident handling. So, although stiffening the suspension imparts the 9-7X with increased straight-line and cornering stability, it also results in a rougher ride, especially for those in the rear seat. In addition, while the in-line six-cylinder and V8 engines offer plenty of power, neither conveys a sense of effortlessness under heavy acceleration and both would benefit greatly from a more sophisticated transmission than the four-speed automatic. Steering and brakes are both responsive, and a tight turning radius helps make the 9-7X surprisingly easy to maneuver in parking lots.

Leather SeatsBig, supportive, comfortable leather seats provide a creamy center for the 9-7X.Sound SystemAn impressive in-dash six-disc sound system is both loud and clear.

Saab purists, rejoice. Unlike the Subaru Impreza five-door that wears a Saab badge and a 9-2X nametag, the 9-7X has its ignition cylinder right where Saabs have always had them: Between the front seats. That, in addition to the sport-styled seats and chrome-ringed gauges, helps reinforce the European performance mindset while contrast stitching, wood-like trim and familiar air vents help further differentiate the 9-7X as a premium European-like vehicle. Interior space is as generous as you'd expect from a mid-size SUV, and the big leather seats are comfortable.

Given that most of its exterior panels are borrowed from its domestic-branded cousins, Saab's designers did an excellent job of giving the 9-7X its own identity. Key differentiators include a familiar three-port grille, wraparound-look rear glass and sporty 18-inch aluminum wheels. Combined with sleek bumper treatments, an inch-lower ride height and tastefully flared wheel arches, the 9-7X comes across as far sportier and more sophisticated than any of the vehicles with which it shares so much. The view from behind includes silver, clear-lens taillights that evoke Chevy's smaller and less-exclusive SUV, the Equinox. And, a trailer hitch beneath a Saab logo may seem odd.

A base Saab 9-7X 4.2i is complete with a full stock of standard equipment that includes a 4.2-liter six-cylinder engine, four-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, leather seats, wood-like trim, moonroof, Bose audio with in-dash six-disc changer, XM Satellite Radio, OnStar, dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows/locks/mirrors, heated power front seats, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, load-leveling rear air suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels. Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and front and side-curtain airbags.

Stepping up to the Saab 9-7X 5.3i delivers not only the 5.3-liter V8, but also xenon headlamps and power-adjustable pedals. Optional on both trim levels are a navigation system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Although the big V8 makes the 9-7X a more capable hauler (maximum towing capacity is 6,500 pounds), the in-line six will prove plenty powerful for most drivers. If you're leaning toward the V8, it's nice to know that the mileage penalty isn't that steep, thanks in part to active fuel management technology which allows the engine to operate on just four cylinders when the power of all eight is not needed. Unlike other European SUVs, the 9-7X doesn't offer manual tap-up/down shift capability. 4.2-liter in-line 6285 horsepower @ 6000 rpm276 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpm EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 5.3-liter V8300 horsepower @ 5300 rpm321 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpmEPA estimated city/highway fuel economy: 13/19

The 2008 Saab 9-7X 4.2i's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts around $ 40,000, while the V8-powered 5.3i model starts around $ 42,000 and will increase to about $ 45,000 with the DVD navigation and rear-seat entertainment systems. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the typical transaction price being paid for the 9-7X in your area, so be sure to check it out before negotiating a final amount. The 9-7X runs in the company of such vehicles as the Volkswagen Touareg and Volvo XC90, and holds its value better than the GM vehicles with which it shares its platform.

Saab 9-7X Overview and History

A new generation of Saab 9-7X made its debut in 2008, featuring a sporty exterior and a well-equipped, cockpit-inspired interior. First unveiled in 2005, the Saab 9-7X is a medium SUV based on the GMT360 platform, just like the General Motors Envoy and the Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
The Swedes at Saab were building planes long before they were building cars so you know their standards ran pretty because in the aeronautical industry there's no room for mistake if you want to get back safely on the ground.

In 1937 the Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or the Swedish Aeorplane Company starting its business but by the end of WWII the good people down there had trouble placing their products on the market. A new market was needed, but for a new market you need a new product. And since the need to get people fast and safe from one place to another was on the rise, what better market than that of automobiles. So, in 1944, Project 92, or the manufacture of the first Saab car began.

The Saab 92 had a very interesting feature but it was an understandable occurence when you consider the man who drew up the car used to design planes: it had a very low drag coefficient of 0.31, one which many modern cars still struggle to attain.

After the Saab 92 came the Saab  in 1955 with an improved engine, upgraded to 3 cylinders and with the trapezoid grille that would become a trademark for the brand in later years. A wagon version of the car, the 95 came in 1959.

In the 60s, the general direction for Saab was bigger, as the 99 model proved. It also brought in more power, as the 99 was turbocharged, a feature common on later cars as well, a tradition for the Swedish automaker from then on. At the end of the decade, Saab reached the 1 million cars mark.

A new platform was needed by the end of the 70s for the aging Saabs, so the company signed a deal with Fiat which later spawned the Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Croma, Lancia Therma and the Saab 9000. All these cars rode on the Type Four chassis, the result of the joint venture.

Ten years later, in 1987, Saab found itself in financial difficulties and was forced to shut down the plant at Arlov in order to cut costs. The fact that GM bought 50% of the stocks in 1990 helped alleviate the problems a little, but the company was still losing money and so the factory at Malmo in order to further reduce costs.

Recovery was going to come in the shape of the Saab 900, developed with the help of GM in 1993, a car which would give the company its first profitable year since the 80s. GM later acquired the rest of Saab's shares as was the initial agreement and from then on Saab became subsidiary to the American giant.

Current models, the 9-3 and the 9-5, are based on Opel chassis and are manufactured in Sweden and Germany. The SUV model 9-7x is being built in america, in the state of Ohio. Now, the company has announced that it would be releasing a new crossover SUV, the 9-4X, after the demise of the 9-2X, basically a rebadged Subaru Impreza.

Mercedes to Saab
Drove 9-7X from FL to NC and it handled beautifully. Not quite the E320 Mercedes ride but more than adequate. Great interior comfort and distinctive exterior. The Bose sound and the add ons to basic vehicle make for a nice package. Pricey and wish mileage was better 15-18/gal. Certainly didn't see many on the road so a unique. So far so good.

Best In Class
Although built on the same platform as the Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Olds Bravada, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender, this vehicle tops them all. The superior suspension alone (unique to the Saab) sets it apart in terms of ride. It is quieter, handles better and is nicer inside than the others (I've test-driven both the Envoy Denali and the Rainier). It looks better, too. Saab got it right!

The un-SAAB SUV
we had test drove an 08 4.2 before leasing a cx-7 as wife wanted a saab but 9-4x wasn't out (and still isn't) Now we need to replace the lease (still no 9-4x). As disappointing as the 4.2 was the Aero is incredible. great suspension & acceleration. The glove soft leather &french stitched door trim combined w/ the 9-5 cup holder & corvette engine & buick ranier laminated glass, olds bravada d- pillar & envoy interior door trim w/blazer bits & pieces make this the best of the ladder-on-frame suv rebadges. Like a tuxedo clad rugged SUV. Coming off lease the SAAB is less than a trailblazer SS w items you can't get on the Chevy. GREAT VALUE, reminds wife of the GMC Typhoon/cyclone when we were kids

A soon to be classic SUV
Purchased this car to replace a Volvo XC 90. This SUV is a real head turner, even when sitting still. Have only seen one other like ours in the area. A ride like a plush SUV but hang when the right pedal is mashed, this really moves with the 6.0 liter V-8. Yes the MPG is low but hey its an all wheel drive full frame SUV, not like the cookie cutter uni body SUVS that are everywhere today. Bought it for $ 26,000 with 12,000 miles on it. Loaded with every option. Would do it over again in a heartbeat. No complaints as of yet.

"Second worst vehicle I’ve owned"
Fun to drive but even in 2018 GM has failed to solve the AFM destroying the engine for a few more mpg. Catastrophic failure of engine three times. Decided to have a remanufactured engine installed No more GM vehicles ever.

"I love this car"
I have owned this car about 3 months, bought with 86000 miles on it. Bought it to pull a 23 foot light camper. It does great. Mileage is acceptable with all it does and still looks nice when not towing. No complaints other than I really don't know why they are so undervalued, considering the car you get. Have had a lot of people question me about it, surprised to learn its a Saab and what it cost me.

"Comfortable Luxury SUV"
I bought this car nearly 2 years and 20k miles ago. Design: Front: Looks great. Back: Trailblazer... bla. Interior: Very nice design all around (except for that terrible flip-out cup holder). Comfort: The seats are absolutely fantastic (all 5). I love the adjustable pedals, power multi-directional seats, and heated seats. Dual climate zones with rear controls is great. Driving: Ride is great. It's not as soft as most SUVs, so it handles better. But is still floats over the bumps. Road noise is average. Handles well in the snow, though noticeably not as awesome as my old Grand Cherokee. Maintenance: This car is higher maintenance. Oil changes require larger amounts of oil which equals more money. The rear air suspension is heaven when it works... but it fails regularly. I gave up and switched it to standard coils. Thermostat went bad and needed replaced. Throttle body was dirty and needed to be cleaned. Right rear speaker has a short and crackles unless you hit the center console (which fixes it for a short period of time). DVD player in roof eats discs. Driver door sticks when opened. MPG is TERRIBLE! TEEEERRRRRIIIBLE! 14MPG City 19MPG HWY

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
