Though not possessing as much European character as one might hope, the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is nonetheless an impressive small sedan that delivers in the key areas of comfort, performance and equipment.

For most of the new millennium, the Volkswagen Jetta has been a popular choice of consumers wanting an upscale small economy car. With its European styling, precision road manners, powerful engines and well crafted interior, the Jetta has provided a step up in prestige and character compared to other economy sedans from Japan and Korea. The historical tradeoff has been a higher price and, on the previous-generation Jetta, a lackluster reputation for reliability.

A rather interesting bit of news has cropped up for the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta, however. In light of stiff competition, VW has dropped the price of the car considerably without making any dramatic cuts in content. Though the Jetta's higher trim levels are still more expensive than average, the overall drop in price has largely eliminated one of the car's greater drawbacks.

The current Jetta was last redesigned midway through the 2005 model year. It's noticeably larger than the previous version and is about the same size as a Toyota Corolla. It's decently roomy as small sedans go and should impress owners with its attention to detail and meticulous build quality. Many editors on our staff are particularly smitten with the performance-oriented Jetta GLI. The GLI is the most entertaining model of the range and goes a long way toward adding some extra personality to the car.

Overall, the 2007 VW Jetta is a very enticing vehicle. It's true that the car lacks the distinctiveness or "cool factor" that made earlier Jettas popular. Having driven it, our editors typically say it's "nice," which may or may not be a good thing. But there's no denying that the Jetta betters almost all other cars in its segment in terms of cabin design, powertrain performance and feature content. Consumers shopping for a small sedan should give it serious consideration.

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is a small sedan offered in four trim levels: base, 2.5, Wolfsburg Edition, 2.0T and GLI. The base Jetta comes standard with 15-inch wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, power heated mirrors, power windows and locks, a 60/40-split rear seat, keyless entry and an eight-speaker CD/MP3 stereo with an auxiliary input jack. The Jetta 2.5 is pretty much identical other than having 16-inch wheels, some chrome exterior trim, a rear center armrest and access to more optional features.

On the 2.5, VW offers two pricey packages. Package #1 adds alloy wheels, leatherette trim, power recline for the driver seat, additional interior storage and an upgraded audio system with an in-dash CD changer and satellite radio. Going with Package #2 gets you most of the features from #1 plus leather seating, a power driver seat with memory positioning, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Homelink, a trip computer, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and a 115-volt rear power outlet. As stand-alone options, VW offers 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof and a navigation system with iPod connectivity.

The Jetta Wolfsburg Edition is equipped in a fashion similar to the 2.5 model but essentially has Package #1 as standard equipment, save for the upgraded audio system. Opting for the Jetta 2.0T nets you the CD changer, along with a more powerful turbocharged engine. The top-shelf GLI has some exclusive features such as bi-xenon headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels or optional 18s, a sport-tuned suspension, color-keyed body cladding, metallic interior trim, sport-oriented front seats and sport fabric upholstery.

Base, 2.5 and Wolfsburg Edition models come with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine capable of 150 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The 2.0T and GLI feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual is standard on the base and 2.5 trims, while the 2.0T and GLI feature a six-speed manual. A traditional six-speed automatic is available on the 2.5. For the 2.0T and GLI, VW offers its slick six-speed DSG sequential-shift transmission that can be shifted manually or placed in an auto mode. All Jettas are front-wheel-drive.

For the turbocharged cars, expect a 0-60-mph time of about 8 seconds flat. Fuel economy isn't so great on the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta, especially now that the diesel engine has been discontinued. EPA ratings for an automatic-equipped 2.5 stand at 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, while the 2.0T with an automatic is rated 25 city/31 highway.

Four-wheel antilock disc brakes, seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants, full-length head curtain airbags and a tire-pressure monitor are standard across the line. Stability control is either standard or optional, depending on the model. Seat-mounted side airbags for rear passengers are optional. In NHTSA crash tests, the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta received four out of five stars for protection of front-seat occupants in head-on collisions and five stars for front- and rear-occupant protection in side impacts. The IIHS gave the VW Jetta its "Top Safety Pick" silver award after the sedan earned top ratings in the agency's frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.

On the road, the Jetta manages to provide both comfortable ride quality and agile handling. Though not as edgy as the previous model, the current VW Jetta has a rock-solid feel with a surprisingly quiet ride. Acceleration is acceptable with all of the engines, but our favorite is the smooth and potent turbo four. This engine is most enjoyable in the Jetta GLI model, which has a taut suspension to back it up.

The Volkswagen Jetta's cabin is filled with high-quality materials and assembled with care. Even the base model has an upscale flair with comfortable seating and tasteful trim. A tall roof line gives the front seats a spacious feel. Headroom is a little tight in the rear, but there's ample legroom for adults. Trunk capacity measures an impressive 16 cubic feet.

Although a full seven inches longer and 300 pounds heavier than the previous-generation Jetta, the new Jetta offers very crisp handling. While it isn't the fastest car in its class, it's now fast enough to nose its way past the pack when it has to. Highway ride is firm, while road, wind and engine noise are all perceptible but not unpleasant. And if your favorite leg of any journey is the twisty one, the Jetta delivers ample cornering ability complemented by quick, smooth manual Tiptronic downshifts and a satisfying exhaust note.

Six-Speed Tiptronic TransmissionThe newest VW transmission shifts quickly and smoothly in three distinct shift modes - regular and sport automatic modes, plus a manual mode.Automatic Dual-Zone Climate ControlA comfort feature not commonly offered on most $ 20,000 vehicles.

Rear-seat passengers will appreciate the marked improvements in space afforded by the new Jetta's increase in overall length and wheelbase. They might also enjoy the available rear-seat armrest, which allows for a useful trunk pass-through as well. Overall, the interior is attractive and refined, with materials and finish that are tough to match in the category.

Ironically, the newest version of the best-selling European car in the U.S. features several styling elements seemingly imported from Japan. The new Jetta is also seven inches longer than the previous generation, which no doubt contributes to its more refined appearance. Whether you find the less-playful styling more appealing may depend on whether you think of the Jetta as a fun beach cruiser or a high-value German sedan.

The Jetta comes with an AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player, one-touch up/down power windows, power mirrors, exterior key opening and closing feature for the windows and optional sunroof, cruise control, manual climate control, outside temperature display, four-way adjustable steering column and eight-way adjustable cloth front seats with manual lumbar support. Standard safety equipment includes traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), active head restraints and front side-impact and full-length side-curtain airbags.

Optional equipment on the Jetta varies by trim and includes automatic dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leather or leatherette seating, power adjustable driver's and passenger's seat, in-dash AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible six-disc CD changer, iPod connector, rear-seat armrest/trunk pass-through, trip computer, electronic stability program and heated washer nozzles. Additional options include a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, leather seating, power moonroof, premium sound system, navigation, alloy wheels, HomeLink, SIRIUS Satellite Radio and 12-way adjustable front seats with driver's memory.

Volkswagen offers a wide variety of engine choices that directly affect the Jetta's personality. The base 2.5-liter, five-cylinder engine is peppy, but not quick, and its fuel economy figures are not terribly impressive, either. If you can swing the extra cash, get the 2.0-liter turbo. This engine delivers better fuel economy than the 2.5-liter and it's fast as well. This same engine is used in the Audi A3 and A4, it's amazingly refined and has minimal turbo lag. 2.5-liter in-line 5150 horsepower @ 5000 rpm170 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3750 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/30 (manual), 22/30 (automatic)2.0-liter in-line 4 Turbocharged200 horsepower @ 5100-6000 rpm207 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1800-5000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/32 (manual), 25/32 (automatic)

Four trim levels comprise the Jetta lineup. The base Jetta has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 17,120, while the 2.5 model stickers for $ 18,620. The turbocharged 2.0T starts at $ 22,620 and the top-of-the-line GLI at $ 24,620. Before you set out to buy a Jetta, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price. It shows what others in your area are currently paying for their cars. The Jetta's resale value is near the top of its class, on par with the Honda Civic, Nissan Altima and Toyota Corolla, better than the Mazda Mazda3 and far better than the Hyundai Elantra, Dodge Stratus and Ford Fusion.

Volkswagen Jetta Overview and History

The history of the “People's Car”, Volkswagen, begins on May 28th 1937 when the “Geselschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagen mbH” company is created. A year later it is renamed into “Volkswagenwerk GmbH” has it's headquarters established in Wolfsburg, a city especially created for the workers on the Volkswagen plant that are going to mass produce Hitler's dream car for the average German, designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

But Hitler's plans weren't going to materialize because WWII started and the plant switched production to armaments and the vehicles under the VW logo went to the army of the Third Reich. After the war, the plant at Wolfsburg went under Allied control, British to be specific, and under the supervision of Major Ivan Hirst, Volkswagen began the mass production of the Type 1, or the Beetle as it would come to be known throughout the world.

Initial sales abroad were disastrous, but through clever advertising, the Beetle gained popularity with the young crowd and from 1945 to 1955 numbers reached the 1 million mark. Meanwhile, sometime at the end of the 40s, Volkswagen also introduced the Type 2, a people carrier, known as the “VW Bully”.

Even through the 60s and 70s, the Beetle manages to stay on top of sales, despite the fact that it was becoming obsolete. Reliability, easy maintenance and reduced fuel consumption made the car remain a consumer favorite. On February 17th 1972, Volkswagen celebrated selling over 15 million units of the Beetle sold, thus surpassing the Ford Model T as the most popular car in the world, a title which it still holds to this day.

Despite the success it had with the Beetle, by the beginning of the 70s, Volkswagen AG was in dire need of new models to replace the aging Beetle. The help came from Audi/Auto Union, which WV had bought back in the sixties. They brought with them the knowledge for front-wheel drive vehicles and water-cooled engines.

In 1974, the first Golf rolls out of the factory's door and becomes and instant hit. Marketed as the Rabbit in the United States and Canada, it was responsible for putting Volkswagen back on the map. That same year, a more sporty model, the Scirocco makes it's way onto the Volkswagen line up. For the smaller car market, the German car maker came up with the Polo in 1976, which was quite popular throughout Western Europe.

The next decade saw Volkswagen trying to improve their products with new generations of all the older models and expanding their influence by taking over Spanish manufacturer Seat and the Czech-based Skoda Auto.

As the 90s rolled in, VW-owned Audi became a direct competitor for BMW and Mercedes-Benz with products designed for a more pretentious market. This left a void in the general market which Volkswagen now tried to fill. The third generation vehicles now came with better quality and standards. Gradually, new luxury models were introduced, like the Touareg, a premium off-road vehicle.

In the last decade, Volkswagen has been busy trying to set records when it comes to CO2 emissions and fuel-efficient technologies. This applies to their normal engines, running on gas and diesel, but they are also developing hybrids.

Nice Solid Compact Car
This car drives and handles well. It's fun to drive and is nicely appointed, but it's the most expensive Jetta package, costs over $ 25,000. Trading in a '01 V6 fully loaded Passat, I didn't want to give up any extras. The new styling is great, and the upgraded 17" wheels make the car stand out. I did not test drive the car on the interstate before buying...big mistake. The road noise is very noticable, much louder than what I'm used to. I keep turning up the radio to compensate. If I had it to do over, I probably would have looked more at a midsize car and checked for a quieter ride. If you're looking for a small car and can get past the road noise, it's a nice car.

I Love this Car!
This is really a great car - it is fun to drive, has a very smooth ride, and handles turns and corners very well. It picks up speed very fast and the Tiptronic transmission is great for people who like to drive. I am very impressed that Volkswagen has taken the initiative to make so many safety features standard and my insurance went DOWN after purchasing a brand new car. It is great - I love the styling and it's just a lot of fun.

Would be better in Germany
I bought my Jetta Brand New of the lot. Everything on this car is decent to good but not stellar. It's a nice, sporty vehicle, great sound system, handles well and I loved it while I leased it. But even during that time frame there were recalls on the vehicle for small things like Light adjustments. Another recall was for the sunroof but they charge you $ 150 to fix it. Third recall was for fixing the wiper blades which threaten to cut the fuel line. The spedometer is off and the clock runs fast. But be warned: If the EPC light comes on you won't have any idea WHAT it is! Recently just spent $ 400 to repair the speed sensor. As with any foreign car: Expect expensive parts and limited service.

My First Jetta or VW for that Matter
I really like this car, I think the exterior styling which is considered bland by some is sort of sporty and elegant and it shares the same large chrome grille feature as VW's luxury counterpart, Audi. The car handles very well and I have the base 2.5L 5-cylinder engine which may not be race car fast but does the job. I notice that the car is very heavy for its class and I like this as it helps keep the car feeling more stable at highway speeds.

"Beware TDI Cam shaft and wiring harness problems"
2006 TDI Diesel - Couple of engineering flaws: Cam shaft controls timing for fuel injection and due to engineering fault has premature cam shaft wear due to too narrow lobes (to try to avoid problems as much as possible use the best properly rated oil you can afford) - eventually engine goes boom when the timing is off by enough and you spend $ 10-12k to replace the destroyed valves, lifters, pistons and everything else inside of it. This happened to me at about 65k miles just after clutch and tire replacement. Shortest lived diesel engine ever... it's about to do it again @ 136k... Also, wiring harness in driver side door is just a little too short inside the hinge area so it flexes and pulls a lot with each door opening and closing. Add in brittleness because of cold in winter and eventually the wiring harness snaps basically in half (disabling everything and blocking access to the fuel door). This happened at about 100k miles even keeping it in a nice garage. Headliner eventually fell from ceiling as well but at this point that's irrelevant. Car had fantastic fuel mileage (I could get 55+mpg comfortably) and was not part of the fraud from the 2009's and later. Was a very comfortable ride and an excellent trim package - At least until the engine detonated. I'm getting rid of it while it is working on detonating a second time (I'm not going to pay 10k to fix it this next time).

2008 Volkswagen Jetta
"Driver's Education Vehicle"
Bought this vehicle with 98,000 miles for use as a driver training vehicle. I've been a driving instructor since 2002 and have gone thru 4 vehicles prior to this one. This Volkswagen is a winner! It's hands down the best driver training vehicle I've owner so far. Great fuel economy, super handling, nice lines, and very dependable! As long as I've kept up with scheduled maintenance, this vehicle has performed in a most exemplary manner and I have been very pleased with it's performance. Almost time to trade her in, which I'm very reluctant to do. I can only hope my next driver's education car will be as reliable and dependable as this has been.Read less

2008 Volkswagen Jetta
"Competent, Fun, and a Downright Deal"
The 2008 Volkswagen Jetta is an admirable car. Its value for the overall car is comparable to equal and higher end sedans. The Wolfsberg Edition with the 2.0L - Turbo gives a fun and exhilarating drive without compromising comfort. It has been an absolute steal, it was cheap for the performance of the vehicle. Performance would have been a 5 if it was not for the turbo lag, engine rmp's from 1000 - 3000 pull like a normal car. But in the 3000 - 3500 rpm range the turbo spools and lurches the car, squatting the rear, and sucking you in the seat. This is quite fun but it hurts the drive-ability of the car for the average person. Reliability is average for a four door sedan, I believe this is due to the turbo 4cyl, a complicated ESC (Essential Stability Control) system, and the Dual-Clutch Transmission. This is quite a lot of tech for a 2008 sport sedan especially since its a limited edition. Maintenance is high after all this particular model is only made in Germany and has to be imported to the States. Styling is also average, nothing really sticks out other than the dealer installed spoiler. Even though reliability is average, quality is high. The A/C still works, interior is intact, and all mechanical components operate smoothly and tether quite favorably. Comfort is high but not fantastic. Highway use the car is planted in a smooth manner that is very controllable with a little road noise, but in town use and bumpy roads makes a bumpy and rigid ride due to its sport package. Even though its rough over bumps, the car is still controllable. This is a very competent and exciting car for its value and anyone would have some good fun in this car.Read less

My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
