Lincoln's luxury flagship is one of only a few big American rear-wheel-drive sedans on the market. If that's what you're looking for, the 2007 Lincoln Town Car will not disappoint. However, full-size European and Japanese sedans are better in most respects.

While the name Town Car has been used by Lincoln as a trim level since the 1960s, 1981 marked the first year the Lincoln Town Car became a model unto itself. Since then, it has become a favorite with traditional American buyers as well as fleet operators, and for good reason. The big car's front-engine V8, rear-wheel-drive layout and its body-on-frame construction generally mean lower maintenance costs, plus the car drives and handles in a way that's familiar to many longtime Lincoln customers. The interior is very spacious and comfortable, making it the perfect candidate for family road trips or use as an upscale airport shuttle.

Despite the reliance on improvements and redesigns over the years, the 2007 Lincoln Town Car still has a distinctly old-school look and feel. For some, that's clearly a selling point and likely attracts plenty of repeat buyers. For others, however, there are many other choices available that provide similar or better amounts of luxury wrapped in more modern packages. For that latter group of shoppers, luxury sedans like the Lexus ES 350, Chrysler 300C and Infiniti Q45 provide more modern styling, high-tech features and better driving dynamics.

The 2007 Lincoln Town Car is a large luxury sedan that comes in four distinct trim levels, starting with the Signature level. The Signature is available in regular- or long-wheelbase (called the L) form, while the Signature Limited and Designer are only available with the regular wheelbase. Standard equipment on the Signature includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, power front seats, power-adjustable pedals, a CD player, an analog clock for the dashboard, automatic headlamps and rear parking sensors. The Signature Limited adds heated front seats, driver seat memory, a wood-and-leather steering wheel, an upgraded audio system with an in-dash CD changer and a full power open/close trunk you can operate via the key fob. The Designer has additional chrome trim, Provence-style leather seating, adjustable rear headrests and two-tone door panels.

The 6-inch wheelbase extension of the Signature L provides increased rear-seat legroom and builds upon the standard Signature model's equipment list with dual rear-seat power points, adjustable rear head restraints, heated rear seats and remote controls for audio, climate and the front passenger seat. Additional options include chrome wheels, HID headlights, a moonroof, trunk-mounted CD changer and a navigation system paired with a THX-certified audio system.

All Town Cars are powered by a 4.6 liter V8 that makes an adequate 239 hp. It's mated to a four-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. The EPA estimates fuel economy for the 2007 Town Car to be 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 on the highway -- fairly respectable numbers for a big luxury sedan.

While the Lincoln Town Car comes standard with side airbags for the front seat occupants, it does not offer head curtain airbags for either the first or second row. Still, the Town Car receives a five-star rating for both front occupants from the NHTSA for the fourth year in a row; five stars is the government's highest rating. Traction control is also standard but stability control is not available. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Town Car a rating of "Good" for offset frontal impacts, which is also that organization's highest rating.

Power from the Town Car's V8 should be adequate for most buyers. The car is able to pass with ease, and freeway cruising at 80 mph is quiet and comfortable. The 2007 Lincoln Town Car has few peers when it comes to transporting large, or large numbers of, people. Besides offering a comfortable ride, this Lincoln is a decent handler -- the steering has some feel to it, and the body doesn't roll too much around corners.

The 2007 Lincoln Town Car is, first and foremost, big. It has a generous interior and a massive trunk (20.6 cubic feet). The car's main goal is to transport multiple passengers to their destination silently and comfortably. Buyers can also select the L version, which offers a limolike 47 inches of rear legroom thanks to its 6-inch-longer wheelbase.

Although the Town Car's ride is probably one of the smoothest you'll find at any price, its suspension upgrades provide it with surprisingly good road manners. The feeling encountered once behind the wheel is one of control and moderation, without the floating disconnect that plagued previous models. Power for the Town Car comes from Ford's modular 4.6-liter V8. Although not the most powerful V8 on the market, the 239-horsepower engine has no problem propelling the Town Car's vast bulk, nor is it short on torque. Off-the-line acceleration is strong in the Town Car, and its four-speed automatic transmission ticks through gears with all the precision of a Swiss watch. Once up to speed, wind and road noise are nearly completely shut out, leaving you in a space where conversations can almost be conducted in a whisper.

Analog ClockA classic analog clock returns to the Lincoln instrument panel.Power Trunk LidThe Town Car's optional power-operated trunk lid means you won't have to put down your packages or golf bags before loading them into the massive trunk.

The Town Car's prominent center console design features a vast stretch of wood that runs the width of the front panel. This places the audio and ventilation controls front and center. A nice touch is the new analog clock with chrome chaplets (those little wing-like decorative dressings) that adorns the new center stack. Legroom is more than generous, especially on the L model that has six inches added to the wheelbase.

Lincoln's attempt to return to the squared-up styling cues from previous Town Cars delivers mixed results. The rear treatment looks great, but the new grille and front headlamps could easily be mistaken for a Mercury Grand Marquis. Signature Limited models feature handsome 10-spoke machined wheels to give the car an upscale appearance that is uniquely Lincoln. Other Lincoln styling cues include a stand-up hood ornament, C-pillar badges and the Lincoln logo embedded in the taillights.

The Town Car features dual-zone automatic air conditioning, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), front and rear cup holders, power locks, power windows, illuminated keyless entry, automatic headlamps, dual-heated power mirrors, inside and left-side auto-dimming mirrors, Rear Park Assist, power-adjustable pedals, AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD, eight-way power seats, leather seating, cruise control, tilt steering, traction control and 17-inch alloy wheels. Signature Limited models add memory for the pedals, driver's seat and mirrors, Audiophile sound, heated front seats, leather and wood steering wheel and power trunk open and close.

Options include voice-activated navigation with THX audio, six-disc CD changer, HID headlamps, two-tone paint, a Designer Edition and a power glass moonroof.

Ford's 4.6-liter V8 is more than sufficient to move the Town Car. Although no BMW slayer, the big V8 is quiet and vibration-free, traits most Town Car owners appreciate more than raw power. Considering the Town Car's ponderous weight, its impressive highway fuel economy figures may make it a better choice than some similarly-sized SUVs.4.6-liter V8239 horsepower @ 4900 rpm287 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4100 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 13/17 (E85), 17/25 (Gasoline)

The Lincoln Town Car Signature has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 42,900, while the Signature Limited is $ 45,765. The Designer Edition has an MSRP of $ 47,500 and the long-wheelbase Signature L starts at $ 51,370. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows that the Town Car is selling around $ 800 above the dealer invoice price. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for their Town Cars in your area. Despite its premium car status, the Town Car does not hold its value well. Kelley Blue Book expects the Town Car Signature sedan to retain less than 50 percent of its value at 24 months and an anemic 23 percent at 60 months.

Lincoln Town Car Overview and History

The Lincoln Town Car is a large luxury sedan, manufactured in St.
Lincoln sprung as an independent luxury-car producer in 1917. Founded by engineering whiz Henry M. Leland after his departure from Cadillac, which he had helped co-found, the company was named Lincoln as a reminder of the admiration Leland bore for the now defunct state-leader. In a macabre coincidence, president JFK was assassinated just like Abraham Lincoln was. At the time of  his death, JFK was being driven in a Lincoln Continental limousine.

However, before such drama occurred, Lincoln was a fairly small company that supplied Liberty aircraft engines for the Army during WWI. Having teamed up with son Wilfred, Leland converted his factory to manufacturing luxury automobiles right after the war. Despite Leland's skill and potential of his vehicles, the factory encountered several design-related obstacles and financial trouble that could not be overcome. Forced into bankruptcy, Leland sold his company to Ford in 1922 for $ 8 million.

Soon after the Ford takeover, Lincoln's first series of automobiles would enter mass production. Under Ford, Lincoln's styling problems were solved as were the financial issues  experimented before. Little changes or none were made to Leland's original engines. Coupled with production cost cuts, this would allow the company to toll out some 5,500 vehicles in December, 1922.

As of 1923, newer body styles appeared, many of them having been the result of partnerships with coachbuilders such as Fleetwood and Brunn. This lead to the appearance of  a diversified range of vehicles comprised of large sedans and limousines that could accommodate as many as 7 passengers. Despite the fairly big price tags these special coach-built vehicles came with, Lincoln sales did not plummet. They did just the contrary, registering a spectacular 45% increase over the previous years with 7,875 vehicles sold.

The 1924's brought forth the release of the famous Flyers that were extensively used by US Police Departments. The cars premiered some features that weren't introduced on private models until 2 years after. Two wheel disc breaks, weapon racks, armored windows and Police whistles were among the many 'accessories' Flyers came equipped with.

Probably the most famous car ever made by Lincoln sprouted in 1932  Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie's drawing board. The later release of the Zephyr in 1936 smashed open the gates for the release of the Continental. The latter was actually a modified 1938 Zephyr Coupe whom Gregorie had sectioned and added a vertical tire mount to. The car became so successful that it sold in over 5000 units until production halted in 1948.

However, the Continental would not go down for good. It was later resuscitated  through the Mark II model. By 1955, the Mark II could be purchased for a stunning $ 10,000, as much as a Rolls Royce cost those days.

Later designs, such as the Town Car and the bulky Navigator, aided Lincoln in becoming the best sold luxury car brand in the US by 1998. After a brief change of ownership between 1998 and 2002 when Lincoln belonged to the Premier Automotive Group, the company returned on Ford premises where it can still be found today.

Despite its tradition as a luxury car manufacturer and presidential limousine supplier, the company has experienced a severe setback in the last few years, having lost against Asian and European imports. This is mostly due to the lack of new models, issue that Ford hopes to solve by reinventing the brand. Lincoln's ascension is still unspooling through the release of models such the MKZ and MKX.

Lincoln Land Yacht
Big, roomy, smooth as silk. Don't expect sporty handling. Handling is fine for a luxury land yacht. It's like riding on a spacious cloud. Parking in a crowded city can be sporty. For a big car, the mileage isn't bad.

Edmunds shortfall
Edmunds, has in the past been less than positive about this car. Without going into detail: the car has very adequate performance, gas mileage is equal to or surpasses many of the cars Edmunds refers to. My wife has an Infiniti Q45 and the Lincoln gets better fuel economy and I believe a more pleasant ride. I am glad to note that Edmunds is less critical of this car recently but one must be aware that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I base these comments on owning 2 Fords, 3 Mercurys and 3 Lincolns. AND they are all American made, mostly. Sorry to see the Towncar go by the wayside. Sorrowfully I cannot determine my replacement. I have driven all the new models Lincoln offers, blah!

"Best deal ever for a Signature in mint condition"
Bought 04 with just under 15k miles. Mint condition, not one scratch. elderly original owner stored it in heated garage during the winter. Paid $ 9k, which was above book value, but a steal for the mileage and condition. Drives excellent, comfort is amazing. Great cubby holes.
