The 2007 Jeep Compass is a decent package but comes up short in terms of design and power when compared to the leading small SUVs in this price range.

For many people, small, car-based SUVs represent an ideal choice for a primary vehicle. Smaller in size and more comfortable than traditional SUVs, yet more stylish than hatchbacks and wagons, they are very popular with younger buyers living in urban environments. For 2007, Jeep, a brand not traditionally known for catering to this type of buyer, finally has an entry in the market segment: the Compass.

The 2007 Jeep Compass is indeed a car-based small SUV that places an emphasis on on-road comfort rather than off-road capability. Like the Liberty, the brand's more familiar small SUV, the Compass utilizes a unibody structure, and the two are about the same in terms of overall length. The Compass differs by way of its fully independent suspension and an optional 4-wheel-drive system that normally operates as front-wheel drive (for improved fuel efficiency) and lacks low-range gearing. Much of its underlying hardware is also used for the Dodge Caliber, the all-new Jeep Patriot and, to a lesser extent, the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Jeep has attempted to differentiate the Compass primarily through styling. It features the brand's traditional seven-slot grille and round headlamps as well as more modern design elements, such as standard 17-inch alloy wheels. It also has a bit more ground clearance than the Caliber, larger approach and departure angles and a special feature for the optional automatic 4-wheel-drive system ("Freedom Drive I") that allows the driver to lock torque between the front and rear wheels for improved traction during off-road situations.

For shoppers interested in a small, carlike SUV, the 2007 Jeep Compass might be worth a look. It's comfortable, generally satisfying to drive, set up pretty nicely with features and doesn't cost that much to get off the dealer lot. But keep in mind that its off-road capabilities are slight. If you're really planning on hitting the trail in a new Jeep, buy a Wrangler or Liberty.

What you will want to do is compare the Compass against other small SUVs such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, both of which are newly redesigned. At this point, you'll probably realize that the Compass comes up short in terms of cargo space, interior refinement and power.

The 2007 Jeep Compass is an all-new small SUV with seating for five passengers. There are two trim levels: Compass Sport and Compass Limited. The Sport is rather basic. It has 17-inch alloy wheels, an easy-to-clean cargo load floor and a CD player with an MP3 jack, but air-conditioning, power windows and mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control and some enhanced interior lighting features are all optional. You get these as standard on the Limited as well as 18-inch wheels, leather seating, heated front seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Main options, depending on trim, include all-terrain tires, a sunroof, a six-disc CD changer, satellite radio, a premium Boston Acoustics speaker system and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Compass comes standard with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine capable of 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. Two drive configurations are offered: front-wheel drive or automatic 4-wheel drive. On front-drive Sport models only, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is available as an option in conjunction with the CVT. However, with only 158 hp, this engine certainly won't make your Compass any faster.

Four-wheel-drive models operate in front-wheel drive in normal situations and automatically and seamlessly apply power to the rear wheels when needed. The system can also be locked with up to 60 percent of the engine's torque supplied to the rear wheels for better off-road traction. For a 4WD Compass with the 2.4-liter engine and a CVT transmission, expect a rather pokey 0-60-mph time of 10.2 seconds.

Standard safety features include stability control with a rollover sensor, full-length side curtain airbags and traction control. Front seat-mounted side airbags are optional. Limited models have a standard tire-pressure monitoring system.

Although 172 hp is pretty decent output for a 4-cylinder engine, when equipped with 4WD and the power-sapping CVT, the Jeep Compass feels sluggish during highway merging and passing maneuvers. For the best acceleration and fuel economy, go with a front-wheel-drive model with the manual gearbox. Mechanically, the Jeep's best feature is its fully independent suspension. With the 18-inch wheels and tires and the 4WD, the Compass feels agile and responsive. It's easy to drive, and it never feels tippy. The downside is that the Compass is ill-suited for anything more than a dusty trail. The Jeep does have up to 8.4 inches of ground clearance, but it lacks low-range gearing and is fitted with all-season tires as standard.

Although generally well laid out, the Jeep's interior is a sea of hard plastic with inconsistent fit and finish. The result is an interior that screams "rental car," which is a shame, because the seats are comfortable and the driving position is excellent. It's also very easy to fold the rear seat flat, plus the front passenger seat folds so you don't have to strap large items to the roof. The cargo area is small, however, measuring just 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 53.6 cubic feet with two folks aboard, which is less than a Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson or Toyota RAV4.

One reason for the popularity of crossovers is that many are discovering they can have the added traction of all-wheel drive wrapped in the comfort and roadability of a car, not a truck. Though it's offered in both front-and all-wheel drive models, Jeep expects many buyers to opt for all-wheel drive, especially in snow belt states. Jeep's Freedom Drive I(tm) is a full-time, fully automatic all-wheel drive system, requiring no input from the driver. On dry pavement, it channels up to 100 percent of available engine power through the front wheels, but, it is continuously variable in response to driving conditions and can direct as much as 50 percent of engine torque to the rear and front wheels, when needed. Drivers can also engage a 4WD lock mode, for better grip in deep snow, sand or mud.

Overall Design Crossover styling runs the gamut from spruced-up wagons to shrunken SUV's. The Compass design hits a nice note, closer to the former than the latter. The body tells you that this is a car-based, street-oriented vehicle (not a truck-based off-roader). And there are just enough styling features (front end, trapezoidal wheel flares) to identify it as a Jeep.Fuel EconomyAs a breed, SUV's are known to drink more than a frat house on a Friday night. Seen in this light, the compact Compass' fuel economy numbers look very respectable.

The contemporary interior of the Compass seats four to five adults. Six-footers fit easily up front, though they'll find legroom snug in back, especially if like-size folks are in front of them. All controls and switchgear are straightforward in design and easy to reach. The seats are cloth in Sport and leather-trimmed in Limited. Plenty of on-board storage spots are available to stow water bottles, CD's and what-have-you. Split rear seatbacks (standard on Limited, optional on Sport) and a fold-flat front seat increase hauling options. Cargo capacity ranges from 22.7-53.6 cubic feet, depending upon how the seats are configured. Drivers must deal with rear quarter blind spots created by the wide rear pillars.

Jeep describes its designs as falling into two categories: Jeep Classic and Jeep Modern. Count Compass in the latter category, compact division. The Compass is close kin to the Dodge Caliber, and the two crossovers share the same basic shape, with a laid-back windshield and a curving roofline. Jeep's variation on the theme starts with a familiar face. The seven-slot grille, clamshell hood and round headlamps immediately mark the Compass as part of the Jeep clan. A high, beveled beltline and trapezoidal wheel openings add an updated take on traditional Jeep design. The wedge-shaped rear pillar, asymmetrical tail lamps and beefy bumper tie the package together in back. When you get right down to it, the Compass looks exactly like what it is - a cross between a station wagon and a sport utility vehicle, made by Jeep.

Compass is offered in Sport and Limited models. Front-wheel drive is standard in both trim levels, and all-wheel drive is available optionally in both. Notable among Compass Sport's standard features are a handful of safety-related items, including side-curtain airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Brake Traction Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation. Limited models add leather-trimmed, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel fitted with redundant controls for the sound system. Eighteen-inch aluminum wheels (in place of 17's) and a tire-pressure-monitoring system are also standard on Limited.

Cousin to Dodge's Caliber, the Compass shares many of the interesting interior options available in Caliber. Among them: a flip-up holster built in the center armrest for your MP3 player or cell phone and a cargo bay ceiling light in back that doubles as a pop-out flashlight. Curiously, the over-the-glove-box cooler option offered on Caliber is not offered on Compass. The available Boston Acoustics(r) premium sound system (nine speakers, 458 watts) includes a pair of speakers mounted on the lift gate that do dual duty. Open the hatch and you can swing the speakers down to provide the soundtrack to your next tailgate party.

Compass is offered with one engine and a choice of two transmissions. The 2.4-liter inline four cylinder engine can be had with either a five-speed manual transmission or optional Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT2) automatic. The 172-horsepower engine works well in the Compass platform and returns above-average gas mileage. The engine is a little loud at full throttle and, as with any small displacement motor, passing takes planning. Steep grades require downshifting with the manual to maintain speed. Driving the optional CVT2 takes some getting used to because it doesn't have the distinct shift points that our ears are conditioned to hearing.2.4-liter in-line 4172 horsepower @ 6000 rpm165 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/29 (4WD w/5-speed manual), 23/26 (4WD w/CVT2)

The MSRP for the Jeep Compass Sport with front-wheel drive starts at about $ 16,000, while a four-by-four version is nearly $ 2,000 more. To see what consumers are typically paying for Jeep Compass models today we suggest you click on the Fair Purchase Price link. In the ever-expanding compact crossover category, the Compass faces a significant amount of competition, some of it from within its own family. The Jeep Patriot has a lower starting price, while the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are two similar crossovers at about the same price. The upper end of Compass' price range coincides with the entry level of three established crossovers: the Subaru Forrester, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. In terms of resale value, we don't expect the Compass to do quite as well as the leaders in the segment, but it should retain its value better than the Korean-brand offerings.

Jeep Compass Overview and History

Introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as a new compact crossover SUV.
Everybody knows Jeep. From Kinshasa to the Andes and from Thimpu to Kamceatka, people are likely to recognize one when they see it. Not that, lets say, Mongolians living in yurts have seen one too many of Jeep commercials but because the brand has spread worldwide over the past six decades and that a large percentage of the Earth's 6 billion inhabitants have seen at least a couple of MASH episodes where Jeep vehicles are extensively shown.

Jeep is currently an automobile brand and trademark of the Chrysler Group. Its appearance was sparked by WWII demands, at times when the US army had contracted three car builders to design a rugged, reliable military vehicle. Among the car builders there was one small Pennsylvania based company by the name of American Bantam. who came up with a surprisingly simple and solid design. The car, called Bantam BRC was surprisingly well built except for a small glitch that was regarded by army officials as a major flaw: Bantam's engine failed to meet the army's torque requirements.

The car was rejected although it had been better built than the competitors' models. Its is widely believed that Wyllis-Overland,  a company comparable in size to Bantam, that had entered the race for  a US army contract had access to the latter's blueprints and technical data. After winning the contract, Wyllis went on to design what would later become today's jeep at their factory in Toledo, Ohio.

Although, it had already appointed the winner, the US army became concerned with Willys due to their impossibility of moving production to another plant if required and because of the company's rather small size that made them vulnerable to espionage and sabotage actions. Thus, the Army commissioned one of the runner-ups, Ford, to build jeeps as well.

It was at this point that the term jeep originated. Ford labeled its vehicles with the GPW initials which are still though to have stood for “general purpose”. However, jeeps were built with a specific purpose in mind and this particular name theory was dropped in favor of another one according to which the G stood for governmental vehicle, the P was a wheelbase indicator  while the W stood fro a Wyllis design signature.

Bartam was forgotten and the Ford-Wyllis partnership proved most productive, the two having built  over 600,000 units during war time at an average cost of just above $ 300 per unit. the name Jeep stuck with the vehicle, sparking the genesis of a brand that would change proprietors often until last year.

The first civilian jeep or CJ was produced in 1941 by Wyliss after which the company changed proprietors often. Wyliss was absorbed by Kaiser in 1953 , becoming Kaiser-Jeep in the process. By 1970 the company had become unprofitable and had no other option than to sell its operations to American Motors in 1973.

The development of Jeep vehicles was resumed with funding from Renault who had also become interested in Jeep's activities. NY 1987, AMC had replaced the CJ with the newly designed and insanely popular up to this Wrangler model. After Renault had withdrawn due to auto-market changes, American Motors was bough out by Chrysler who later merged with Daimler Benz to create the Diamler Chrysler group who is presently responsible for manufacturing and marketing the Jeep.

Jeeps are widely known for their ruggedness and reliability on rough terrain and are most famed for their solid axles that allow for increased ground clearance by fitting larger tires. Older Jeeps have extensively served in Vietnam where their name was translated into “just enough essentials parts”. The vehicle's off-road abilities are still its major selling point and the brand itself has amassed an army of loyal fans.

2007 Jeep Compass Consumer Reviews

It's a Jeep thing!
I just bought my Steel Blue 4x4 Sport and I am 100% completely in love with it! It's just the perfect size for an SUV and the gas mileage is great. I couldn't be more pleased. The ride is so smooth, as well as the CVT transmission. I think all the Compass haters need to go drive one before they make their final judgment. I didn't like it at first; one test drive is all it took!

Was looking for a car for the wife. Leaning towards the Liberty, liked the look etc. and great cash incentives right now. From what I had heard Compass had no go. Test drove the Liberty then the Compass. The minute I drove the Compass knew it was the car she would enjoy. SUV look, had plenty of get up and go, plus the ride was so much better than the Liberty. It was what she wanted and is a lot more than I expected. Only options we got were the automatic, Drivers Convenience Group (recommended), the E Package (power windows etc.), Yes Essentials premium seats (recommended). The car drives great, plenty of room, zips down the freeway. Everything we wanted and more for a great price.

Not worth buying worst car I ever owned
Only had my Jeep Compass for 9 months I bought it used with 90 k miles since owning it the 9 months dumped about 6 grand into it def. not worth what the resale value is it does drive and I feel it is reliable to a point but every part that needs to be replaced when I had the issue was a arm and a leg I feel Chrysler and the jeep dealerships now this so everytime I bring it in its o this much time this much to fix while the parts are no where near what they cost or I feel they just try to get money from u I have a aftermarket exhaust which comes from the cat back which is not a no name brand it has a life time warranty on it and there telling me it all has to be replaced that my cat is aftermarket too lol I helped put it on I know there's only one cat and it goes from the cat back it was just the muffler and the pipe that went to the cat lol. But any way just trying to say that I'm very disappointed in this vehicle and jeep themselves

New Compass Owner
Was looking at the Jeep Liberty and other SUV's. Was skeptical about the Compass because of some reviews. The Compass drives more like a car and much better comfort than the Jeep Liberty IMO. Bought the FWD auto, and the power is very adequate and the ride is very smooth and quiet. Goes down the freeway at 70mph no problem. The paint finish is great. This is the wife's daily driver and she loves the comfort, style, overall handling. We bought it for town and freeway driving, not off-road. Jeep has a winner in the price group. Would recommend the 26E package and Drivers Convenience group if you like a little more power options and gadgets.

"Do not buy this vehicle!"
I bought this car used with 65,000 miles on it. The first year was normal wear and tear repairs; tires, brakes, rotors. In the past year alone I have had to replace the fuel pump, engine cradle (really expensive), wiring fixes, sensors and now sway bar links and the rack and pinon. Not to mentions the cab noise is like my windows are open! I will never buy a jeep and I’m getting rid of this vehicle soon!

"Awful"
This car is one of the worst cars you can ever purchase. This car was a money pit to the max, I spent $ 3,500 on random repairs. Now my father in law is a mechanic so I would be shocked to see how much it would be if I had to pay for labor. My wife would constantly call me telling me the car sounds funny and had issues accelerating or something was grinding. I told my wife that we were going to park this car in the garage and just buy a Toyota cause I have paid a total of $ 2,000 in repairs for the car. Which that one was my fault because I didn't get the brakes replaced for a long time. But I have had the Toyota for 6 years and the Jeep Compass for 2 years. Do yourself a favor and avoid this car, it's unreliable and is a very low quality car. There's a reason these Jeeps are so low in value.
