The 2007 Dodge Magnum blows away all wagon stereotypes and pleases customers with its good looks, utility and performance.

Since its arrival a couple years ago, the Dodge Magnum wagon has won over families and performance enthusiasts alike with its winning combination of surprising good looks, excellent utility and high-output engine options. For 2007, the rear-wheel-drive Dodge Magnum R/T is available with a new R/T Performance Group package. It includes 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, all-season performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension, quicker steering and a performance exhaust and intake that add 10 extra horsepower.

If you're looking for a performance-oriented midsize or large wagon, the 2007 Dodge Magnum is a great choice. Its solid construction and still-fresh styling should make it a pleasure to own. As for models, the SRT8 version is less than half the price of a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon and also boasts better pricing and utility than the Audi S4 Avant. More common V6 or R/T models also compare well to sport wagons like the Chrysler Pacifica, Mazda 6, Saab 9-3 and Subaru Legacy GT.

The 2007 Dodge Magnum comes in four main trim levels: SE, SXT, R/T and SRT8. The SE comes with air-conditioning, a telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, a CD player with an auxiliary jack, and full power accessories. The SXT features a more powerful engine, 17-inch alloy wheels (18s for all-wheel-drive versions) and a power driver seat. The R/T adds a V8, 18-inch wheels (19s for AWD) a slightly firmer suspension, an upgraded audio system, satellite radio and leather seats. Popular options for these models include a sunroof, automatic climate control, a navigation system and rear-seat entertainment system. A new R/T Performance Group package is also available for the Magnum R/T this year. The high-performance SRT-8 is equipped similarly to the R/T but has 20-inch alloy wheels, upgraded brakes, a stiffer suspension and special interior and exterior trim details.

The Dodge Magnum SE comes with a standard 2.7-liter V6 engine that puts out 190 hp and 190 pound-feet of torque. The SXT upgrades to a 3.5-liter V6 good for 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. For serious hauling power, the R/T comes equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 with a multi-displacement system good for 340 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. The optional Performance Group package adds an additional 10 hp. The SRT8 comes with a monster 6.1-liter V8 that produces 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.

Magnum SXT and R/T models can be specified as either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. All others are rear-drive only. In terms of transmissions, the SE has a four-speed automatic but all others come with a five-speed automatic.

Four-wheel disc brakes are standard across the line. Antilock brakes, traction control and stability control are optional on the SE and standard on SXT and R/T models. Available or standard safety options, depending on trim level, include full-length side curtain airbags, a tire-pressure monitoring system, stability control, self-sealing tires and adjustable pedals.

The base V6 engine provides adequate power and an overall pleasant driving experience, but sluggish acceleration off the line makes for a convincing argument to upgrade to either the SXT's V6 or the V8. The SRT8 is a blast to drive, with gobs of torque, sport-tuned suspension and big brakes that allow you to hustle the wagon around sharp turns like a much smaller car.

Inside the 2007 Dodge Magnum, the cabin is spacious for driver and passengers alike, particularly in the backseat. The cargo area provides 72 cubic feet of room when the 60/40-split rear seat is folded down. The rear liftgate swings up instead of out, and the Magnum offers an optional cargo organizer as well.

The muscular HEMI V8 is the heart of the beast and can launch the big wagon like a rocket to 60 miles per hour in five seconds. The AutoStick's manual performance disappoints, however, in that it can be slow to respond and sometimes needs a second sideways tap to get the job done when shifting gears. The ride and handling balance is also impressive. With SRT8-tuned springs and shocks, large stabilizer bars and Goodyear three-season high-performance tires on 20-inch wheels (all-season tires are optional), it corners almost like a racer but doesn't beat you up unnecessarily on rough surfaces. Steering is tight and precise, and braking is linear, stable and powerful, thanks to big four-piston Brembo brakes at all four corners.

SRT8-Enhanced HEMI V8"It's the street engine that racers would build," says SRT8 Director Dan Knott. "It kicks butt on the track, and it kicks butt on the street." It sounds and feels terrific. Just don't expect frugal fuel efficiency. Gangster-Wagon StylingThe standard Magnum is aggressive and slightly menacing, and the SRT8 treatment makes it more so. The custom chop-top look creates some blind spots and low, bunker-like seating, especially in back, but it's worth it if you like the look.

The two-tone gray interior features deeply sculpted, highly-bolstered power front bucket seats with suede (not slippery leather) inserts to hold occupants' posteriors in place during cornering, and all seats have contrasting red stitching. The leather-covered steering wheel has a "carbon fiber" texture for excellent grip. Other SRT8 interior touches include satin-silver finish on the center stack and a full instrument cluster with a 180 miles-per-hour speedometer.

The Magnum begins with a big Dodge-signature cross-bar grille and finishes with a full-width tailgate cut well up into the roof for easy loading. These extremes are well connected by an upswept belt-line, low roof and tank-turret side windows. To our eyes, it's unique and striking. The SRT8 (Street and Racing Technology) treatment adds aggressive performance fascias with a lift-reducing air dam and brake cooling ducts in front (watch out for high curbs!) and an integrated aerodynamic wake modifier and chrome 3.5-inch exhausts in back, plus a functional rear spoiler. Other touches include a mesh-textured grille with chrome trim, satin-finish bumper inserts, body-color mirrors and door handles and SRT8 badging. Three colors are available: Red, silver or black.

To the regular Magnum's long list of standard equipment, the SRT8 adds a six-disc CD changer, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power-adjustable pedals and a rear cargo net. Major safety features include advanced multi-stage front air bags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

Available options include a power sunroof, heated front seats, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, UConnect communications system with Bluetooth wireless technology and supplemental side-curtain air bags.

SRT8 engineers boosted the HEMI V8's horsepower from 340 to 425 and its torque from 390 to 420 pounds-feet by increasing its displacement from 5.7 to 6.1 liters, raising its compression ratio from 9.6:1 to 10.3:1 and redesigning its aluminum cylinder heads, intake and exhaust systems for better flow and higher rpm. The block is painted classic HEMI orange, and the valve covers are black. All that's missing is the regular HEMI's fuel-saving Multiple-Displacement System (MDS), which transparently disables four of the engine's eight cylinders at light loads for better fuel economy, but that's a loss with which we think SRT8 buyers can live.6.1-liter V8425 horsepower @ 6000 rpm420 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20

The 2006 Magnum SRT8 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 38,345 and, given its limited availability, should be available for about that amount, though some dealers may ask more until initial demand is satisfied. Its only direct competitors are Chrysler's other HEMI-powered SRT8s, the similarly-priced Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 sedans. Make sure and check the Fair Purchase Price page to see what consumers are actually paying for the Magnum SRT8. The SRT8 version of the Magnum is expected to have considerably better-than-average resale value.

Dodge Magnum Overview and History

Its redesigned front fascia sported a smaller grille and squared-off headlights, plus an updated center console. Built on Chrysler's LX platform, the Dodge Magnum is actually a station wagon version of the 300C, with different exterior styling.
Dodge practically patented the muscle car. Little did they know they would become one of America's top Automobile manufacturers and that the Charger model, for example, particularly the 66-67 one, would trigger jaw dropping amazement at its sight. John Francis and Horace Elgin Dodge were making bikes in 1901 when they decided to move their company, the Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan.

Before Cadillac would outrun Dodge in engine development years later, the Brothers were supplying car parts for many producers. Their early involvement in the process of making cars lead them to starting their own business, entering the queue for a large order of recognition and notoriety. Setting the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company in 1914 brought them a step closer to the counter.

The first Dodge automobiles shared some of Ford Model T's features but outran the latter in terms of ignition and other improvements meant to ease driving. One of the major advantages Dodge offered was a smooth, electrical start rather than the sluggishly classic crank start. Built for the middle class, the cars quickly became a commercial success, mainly due the clever blend of reliable ruggedness, engine improvements and style elements.

By 1917, Dodge had produced enough cars to start thinking expanding in other car-manufacturing areas. Trucks seemed like something they could successfully take on and the Dodge truck division came to being. Dodge trucks were used by the US army during the First World War after which they kept being used as commercial vehicles.

The Dodge brothers sold their business to Dillon, Read & company for the astoundingly large sum of  $ 146 million, said to be the largest amount in history to have been paid at the time. Dillon helmed Dodge management only for 3 years, passing the new acquisition to the Chrysler Corporation  on July 31, 1928.

Due to Chrysler's financial conquests over some European automotive groups, such as the British Rootes group and the French Simca, Dodge is introduced to Europe in the 60's. Lightweight commercial vehicles are sold here under a different badge. The Dodge 50 series is fairly well received in the UK, becoming a favorite for military and utility operations.

1977 brought forth the collapse of Chrysler's European subsidiary and its adjacent Dodge branch altogether. The Dodge factory as well as some rights to use the Dodge name were purchased by Renault who resumed the production of Dodge's commercial vehicles. However, Renault only made use of the Dodge name till the 80's when it gave up control over the name rights. Only the factory was kept.

Dodge is currently part of the DaimlerChrysler group and has been lately been know for its trucks rather than retro-future stylized muscle cars as it used to be know for during the 60's and 70's. Much like any other American car builder, Dodge garnered huge amounts of success at the time with the launch of the Charger and Coronet models, to name only a few.

As far as the company's current status is concerned, trucks make the most sales, representing 78% of the division's venue. Still undergoing intensive promotion in Europe, Dodge have sought to reach  the same type of customer it did back in the 70's by launching a series of  mean-looking, rowdy  road-tamers such as the Nitro and Caliber.

2007 Dodge Magnum Consumer Reviews

Dodge Salesrep's Review
I worked @ the dealership for 14mos. and drove all models available from SE to SRT. The 2.7L V6 in the SE just isn't powerful enough for a 4000 lb car, especially in steep climbs, and it dosen't have ESP like the SXT and higher models. I purchased my SXT, because the 3.5 L V6 has a very good track record of reliability and I could not afford the RT at the time. If you can afford the RT, GET IT instead of the SXT! If you can't, the SXT has most of the base features the RT has, including the 5 speed autostick trans. Use a high grade motor oil, I use CASTROL GTX or SYNTEC and have noticed an increased gas mileage of almost 5 mi./ gal. Some recalls exist, get them executed ASAP! Nice car!

More than just a wagon
This is the affordable fun wagon I was waiting for! V6 engine is plenty, but the SRT8 would be a dream!

Clean Cut Car
The car is very clean cut and has an aggressive look which I like. The horsepower sucks and wish I got the hemi model for that reason. Space and comfort is great though. Gas mileage stinks and I don't have a heavy foot.

Looking Good
I own a 1969 Superbee, 1971 Cuda, & a 1981 Corvette and I have as much fun and more comfort in the Magnum as I do in all of the other cars I own. If you are looking for a car, I would highly recommend the Magnum. Dodge has discontinued this car which I think is very foolish.

2005 Dodge Magnum
"Great value and versatility."
We have owned this car for quite some time and just love about every aspect. It has the 3.5 V6 which supplies adequate power and economy at the same time. Nothing spectacular but better than expected. It rides and drives well, smooth, fairly quiet, and is comfortable. It is an AWD and here in the Ozarks it's almost a necessity. Otherwise it's a pretty plain SXT without all the bells and whistles. It does have a sunroof, power driver seat, power locks (keyless entry), and a decent sound system. As for the style, the uniqueness is the most satisfying - you just don't see yourself coming and going but after so many years, it starts getting a little old and boring. So what do you do if you want to keep the car and make it a bit different? We put a nice aftermarket roof rack on it, BBS wheels, and a little pinstriping none of which cost much but changed it enough to make it like a new car to us. Evidently it's attractive because we get compliments we never expected. Would I recommend a Magnum? A definite "YES" if you can find one to your liking.

"Fun First Car"
I absolutely loved my SRT Magnum the whole time I had it. It was one of the best cars I've ever driven from Orlando, FL all the way to San Antiono, TX. I wasn't the best on gas. but for the size and weight of the car, it sure could move.
