Although not exciting to look at or drive, the Chevrolet Malibu offers excellent value with its roomy cabin, peppy performance (with either V6) and good fuel economy.

With the 2007 Malibu, Chevrolet is fielding a competitive entry in the midsize family sedan segment. Though the styling is quirky from some angles, it makes for a space-efficient interior. For instance, the Malibu offers some of the best rear-seat legroom in its class. It's also quite flexible in terms of cargo-carrying capacity -- thanks to a fold-flat front passenger seat and a more common split/folding rear seat, long objects can be carried inside the car.

The Chevy Malibu shares its General Motors "Epsilon" platform with the sporty Saab 9-3, and although not as athletic as the Saab, it's suitable for a wide variety of drivers. Most folks will be happy with the midlevel LT model's peppy yet fuel-efficient 3.5-liter V6, smooth ride quality and respectable handling. The recently introduced Malibu SS provides driving enthusiasts with more athletic handling, better steering feel and snappier performance thanks to the most powerful engine (a 240-horsepower V6) in the lineup.

Overall, Chevy's midsize sedan has the bases covered when it comes to providing what most buyers in this segment want -- affordability, a comfortable ride, respectable performance, a roomy cabin and excellent crash test scores. The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu may not be quite as refined as the class leaders, but with its overall competency and lower purchase price compared to import-brand competitors, it merits serious consideration.

The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu sedan is available in four trim levels: base LS, midlevel LT, luxury LTZ and sporty SS. The LS comes with air conditioning, a CD player, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, power windows and mirrors, keyless entry and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. The LT adds remote vehicle start, fancier upholstery, a cargo net, adjustable lumbar support for the driver and an upgraded audio system. With the LTZ, one gets leather seating, a rear spoiler, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-adjustable pedals and OnStar. The SS features 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, more supportive sport seats and unique trim. Major options for the Malibu include an in-dash CD changer, satellite radio and a sunroof.

The Malibu LS and LT come with a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 144 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. Standard on the LTZ and optional on the LT is a newly revised version of the 3.5-liter V6 that now makes 217 hp and 217 lb-ft of torque. The SS comes with a 3.9-liter V6 good for 240 hp and 241 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission is the sole gearbox, and the SS model features a manual-shift mode. The 3.5-liter V6 is the best choice for most folks, as it offers snappy performance along with impressive fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway.

Front seat-mounted side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are optional on the LS and LT, and standard on the LTZ and SS. Chevy equips all V6-powered Malibu sedans with antilock brakes and traction control; otherwise, it's optional. In NHTSA crash testing, the Chevrolet Malibu earned a perfect five stars for front-occupant protection in head-on collisions. In the side-impact test, a Malibu with side airbags received five stars for front-occupant protection and four stars for rear-passenger protection. In frontal offset crash testing conducted by the IIHS, the Malibu earned the top score of "Good," as it did in IIHS side-impact testing, when equipped with side airbags. Without the side airbags, it rated "Poor" in the latter test.

Power is adequate with the base four-cylinder, but most buyers will want to step up to one of the V6s, both of which offer plenty of torque for merging and passing. A softly tuned but composed suspension gives the Chevy Malibu a smooth ride and predictable handling in the corners. Unfortunately, the car's electric steering ruins the fun by providing too much power assist most of the time. The SS fares much better with its traditional hydraulic power steering and sport-tuned suspension. The front disc/rear drum brakes on the LS and LT perform adequately in traffic, but stopping distances are long for this class. We recommend the four-wheel disc brakes that are optional for the LT and standard on the LTZ and SS.

The Malibu's space-efficient cabin offers plenty of room all around for four adults and will easily accommodate five if your backseaters are children. The front seats are broad and comfortable, even on long trips, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel and power-adjustable pedals ensure an ideal driving position. The design is rather bland, and materials quality is about midpack for the segment. Most controls are intuitive and easy to use. Trunk capacity stands at a respectable 15.4 cubic feet and cargo capacity is optimized via the fold-flat front passenger seat and 60/40-split rear seat.

In the areas of acceleration, cornering and steering feel, the Malibu Maxx SS delivers performance on par with the best imports. The steering feel is nicely weighted and the car tracks straight without the need for constant steering inputs. The big 18-inch tires contribute greatly to its solid cornering manners, yet the firm sport suspension manages to deliver a comfortable ride that is never jarring or bouncy. Although the V6 does deliver good power and potent passing performance, the four-speed automatic saps some of the fun, delivering a sluggish performance marked by slow downshifts. Fortunately, the automatic's programming can be overruled by engaging the Tap-Up/Tap-Down manual mode which, though not as fun as a true manual, allows the driver to hold a lower gear during spirited drives.

Power-adjustable foot pedalsStandard power-adjustable foot pedals make it easy to find the perfect driving position.Fixed Rear Roof PanelsA neat feature that creates a more airy feeling for rear-seat passengers.

The Malibu Maxx SS provides a roomy and wide cabin, with nicely bolstered front sport seats and a very convenient 60/40 split rear seat that will slide fore and aft. The passenger-side front seat can fold flat, thus extending the load length right up to the instrument panel. From behind the wheel the driver views a set of circular instruments trimmed in chrome and housed in a hooded bin. The audio and ventilation controls are stacked one atop the other and protrude slightly for ease of use. The Malibu Maxx SS offers a number of innovative features rarely found in this class, such as power-adjustable pedals, rear fixed glass skylights and an optional flip-up rear-seat DVD player.

The Malibu Maxx's blocky, upright body presents a satisfying change from the rounded look so common in this class. The SS treatment adds a more powerful engine, 18-inch five-spoke wheels, a sport suspension, rear spoiler and silver SS logos adorning the front doors. The revised front end features a mesh pattern filling the grille and lower air intake and a set of integrated fog lamps. The Malibu Maxx SS features a fixed glass panel roof allowing rear-seat occupants more sunlight, with dual individually retractable shades for those times when it gets too hot for comfort.

The Malibu Maxx SS features a long list of standard equipment, including a four-speed automatic transmission with Tap-Up/Tap-Down sport shifting, 18-inch aluminum wheels, four-wheel anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes, traction control, sport seats, three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, front and rear head-curtain airbags, remote keyless entry, cruise control, power adjustable pedals, six-way power driver's seat with manual lumbar support, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, AM/FM/CD stereo with rear seat audio controls and a rear wiper/washer.

The Malibu Maxx SS can be outfitted with a power glass sunroof, flip-up rear-seat DVD entertainment system, XM Satellite Radio, OnStar and an in-dash six-disc CD changer.

The Malibu Maxx SS is powered by a 3.9-liter V6 engine utilizing variable valve timing (VVT) and a variable intake manifold for increased low-end torque. This engine is a derivative of the 3.5-liter V6 found on the base Malibu Maxx, meaning it uses an iron block with aluminum heads and has only two valves per cylinder. Although the engine lacks the sophistication of dual overhead camshafts, it still develops an impressive 240 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque at a very low rpm. Strong performance is accompanied by smooth operation and respectable highway fuel economy.3.9-liter V6240 horsepower @ 6000 rpm240 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24

The Malibu Maxx SS has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 24,200. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the Malibu Maxx SS is selling for about $ 450 over dealer invoice. Prices may vary by region, so be sure to check the price in your area before you set out to buy. The Malibu Maxx SS is expected to retain an average value, but lower than the Hyundai Elantra GT, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Caliber and the Mazda Mazda6hatchback.

Chevrolet Malibu Overview and History

Chevrolet introduced its 6th generation Malibu range in 2003. Chevrolet launched the 6th generation Malibu in 2003, developing the new model on a brand new Epsilon platform (replacing the N platform and serving as base for cars like Opel Astra or Cadillac BLS).
Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

Jim's Chevrolet Malibu
I have read allot about the engine in this car (ecotech) and have heard nothing but good comments about it. I know they have increased the power in this engine to 900 HP for racing, so I believe this engine will work for me. Maybe it will come. However, I presently have allot of power for what I need. It is hard to keep this car at 55 MPH with barely touching the gas pedal. It passes very easily. It looks great. Runs smooth and quiet. People have asked me what kind of car is it. They are surprised when I tell them it is a Malibu. I presently get 33.8 MPG combined.

This car is a maintenance nightmare
When I look at the comments from the first year of ownership from individuals who bought this vehicle new, I see many good comments. The complains come from individuals as the 2007 Malibu acquires some age and mileage and many, many of the complains are the very same I have experienced. We have replace the intermediate steering wheel shaft three times (this is what causes the rattle under the dashboard at 45 MPH many owners describe here), we have replaced the $ 1600 electronic power steering unit (this is a frequent complaint), we replaced a defective oil filter bracket (a 26 year Chevrolet Service Department Manager said this was a very poor design), we have had the issue with the passenger side air bag/seat belt light going off and on that many people describe as well and recently experience the issue with our fuel gauge needle moving up and down, the gas low chime going off and finally it failed the emissions testing in our county in TN because the fuel gauge issue was really due to the fuel sending unit actually in the gas tank that was defective (as well as the fuel pump) and it cost me $ 700 to have it fixed. While being repaired for that issue I asked my mechanic to determine why the heat had stopped working recently and they found the water pump was leading coolant. Sadly, this car is one of the best looking vehicles I have ever owned, it offers a very comfortable ride and has a great engine with great pickup but the thousands of dollars in repairs I have spent on it will insure I don't by a Chevrolet product when my wife and I buy two new vehicles cash in two years when we retire. My work car is a 2000 Malibu and besides the ignition switch recall, I've never spent any repair money on it except for normal tires, brakes, tune up, routine maintenance items.

Chevy bought me over with this car
First of all I would like to say that I find it disappointing to read negative reviews on such a marvelous car. Anyone experiencing major engine or trans. issues has probably not serviced their vehicle at regular reccomended intervals. The 2.2 liter ecotec engine is incredibly economical, though it could use a few more horses. Before i purchased this car from my father, it had been used every day as a company car. My father is a salesman who is on the road daily with considerable amounts of extra cargo weight added. He was putting 500+ miles on it weekly. This car has had no issues with engine, transmission, torque conv, etc. It currently has 105,432 miles and still runs strong.

I absolutely love my car!
I'm a full time college student and live an hour away from school, & I also work 30 minutes away from home. Living in MI, where our winter roads are treacherous and you'd usually buy a vehicle with 4WD. My car has never failed me and has always been 100% reliable, even with a 1 day drive across the nation to FL. The only downer I've experienced is my gas Guage being broken on E.

"Got it as a commuter, but now love it"
Got mine used from a guy I work with for $ 400. When I got it, it had 199,000 miles. It has 225,000 miles on it now, and it just passed state inspection again. The engine doesn't leak a drop of oil, transmission shifts smooth, and it's still pretty comfortable. Not the most stylish car, but I have zero complaints. Would definitely consider another one, if this one ever dies. And a little side note, I'm a die-hard Toyota person !!

"A Well-Kept Secret at 180,000 miles"
We purchased the car for only $ 11,500 as a lease turn-in with only 20,000 miles. Car has been great over 160,000 miles and 11 years. Smooth V-6 engine, powerful, good on gas, as versatile as an SUV. Great legroom. Great OEM paint. I polish the car but the finish and alloy wheels have held up very well. Has only needed routine maintenance. No surprises. We will be trading or selling as we now need something newer, but even with high miles this would be a great commuter car for someone else. Really too bad GM did not know how to market these. They might not have had to go through bankruptcy.

"Cant kill a Chevy"
I bought this car in 2004, I have owned several Chevys (and many others) throughout the years and they have all been great. This car is comfortable, dependable and great on gas for its size and it is still going strong. I was not sure about the power of a 4 cylinder engine in that size car when I bought it, but it does great and I love the gas mileage it gets. Size, comfort, economical and dependable, what more could you asks for in a car.
