From the Sport Wagon to the WRX, the all-wheel-drive Impreza is an affordable and enjoyable alternative to more mainstream cars.

Subaru has always marched to the beat of a different drummer, and rather than try to compete directly with the small sedans from Honda and Toyota, Subaru goes its own way by offering a few things those mainstreamers don't: big power, all-wheel-drive and a wagon body style.

The Impreza has been redesigned for 2002 and is available in five trim levels: 2.5 RS sedan, WRX sedan, 2.5 TS Sport Wagon, Outback Sport wagon and WRX Sport Wagon. Powering these Imprezas are a 2.5-liter, 165-horsepower, horizontally-opposed (or "Boxer") four-cylinder engine for the RS, TS, and Outback models, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter Boxer kicking out an impressive 227 horsepower for the rally racing-inspired WRX. The Boxer engine layout allows for a lower center of gravity, which contributes to better handling. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic.

All Imprezas have fully independent suspension and antilock brakes. The high-performance WRX and 2.5 RS versions get four-wheel disc brakes with the 2.5 TS and Outback models having a more conventional front disc and rear drum arrangement.

Subaru claims that safety, handling and ride qualities have all been improved via its Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame body structure and overall increased structural rigidity. The former promotes greater protection in a collision (be it frontal offset, side or rear) while the latter enhances the Impreza's handling and ride.

Standard equipment levels are generous. The 2.5 TS has air conditioning, height-adjustable driver seat, power windows/locks/mirrors and an 80-watt stereo with CD deck. The Outback Sport adds bigger (16-inch) wheels, two-tone paint scheme, massive fog lights, floor mats and cargo area enhancements that include a power point and hidden storage compartment. The RS features a sport-tuned suspension with a wider front track, four-wheel disc brakes, high-performance tires on its 16-inch alloys, sport seats and leather wrapping for the steering wheel, gear shifter and handbrake handle.

Enthusiasts who want something they can really sink their feet into should look at the WRX. The all-out Subie has the performance hardware mentioned earlier as well as a functional hood scoop, limited-slip rear differential, dual-outlet exhaust and the option of 17-inch wheels. Inside the cockpit are alloy pedals, front side airbags, 6-disc CD changer, sport seats and a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel. High power and relatively low weight allow this rocket to blast from zero to 60 mph in just over six seconds. And the all-wheel drive means that those who live in less than perfect climates can enjoy this performance car all year round.

Offering a generous helping of standard safety, performance and luxury features, the Impreza lineup strikes us as a nice alternative to run-of-the-mill small cars.

Subaru Impreza Overview and History

Already on the market since 1993, Subaru improved the Impreza in 2000 by adding a new sportier sedan flavor equipped with a 2.5-liter engine and with all wheel drive. In fact, Subaru Impreza was still the only car in its class which came with all-wheel drive as standard. Similar to the previous models, the Station Wagon was equipped with mud guards and roof rack as well as different trims from the sedan version.
Subaru actually means “unite” and it refers to the six stars on the logo that stand for the 6 companies that are united under the FHI group. The largest of the stars represents Fuji Heavy Industries. The company started out in 1917 in Japan as a aircraft research laboratory but soon moved to producing airplanes.

After WWII, the company created a scooter, the Fuji Rabbit with the spare parts from airplanes. Pretty soon, the company split up into different business that manufactured scooters, coaches, engines and chassis. Then CEO Kenji Kita decided that it would be a good idea to get involved in car making and pretty soon the first Subaru car was created, the Subaru 1500 (1954).

The 1500 or P1 was followed by the 360 in 1958, the Sambar in 1961, the 1000 in 1965, gthe 1100 and the R2 in 1969. During the 70s, the Leone came out and then later, in the 80s, the Alcyclone (1985) and the Legacy (1989) were added to the Subaru line-up.

Slowly, in the 90s, the company moved away from the manufacture of small vehicles and concentrated on rally cars, such as the Vivio and Impreza. Different versions of the Impreza WRX won the world championship several times under drivers such as Colin McRae.

Using the technology from the aeronautical industry, Subaru employed many successful inventions in the automotive industry. One of the first was the us of horizontally opposed “boxer” engines as well as the use of monocoque construction. Also, Subaru is the only car manufacturer to offer all-wheel drive as a standard on most of its models. The Japanese manufacturer was also the first to introduce electronic continuously variable transmission (ECTV) which replaces standard gears and gives smooth acceleration while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

Subaru also takes a keen interest in environmental protection, having achieved an odd  record: 0 landfill status for their plant in Lafayette, Indiana which means that the factory generates no trash. Also, the company has an extensive recycling program for its own cars, not to mention the program for hybrid and fuel efficient cars.

Outback Sport AWD 4dr Wagon (2.5L 4cyl 5M)
Fantastic all around car for anyone
I have owned this car for over 13 years and put 270,000 and counting miles on it. The car has held up to everything I throw at it and never left me stranded. It has even held up to numerous exhaust, engine and suspension modifications I have thrown at it during my weekend tinkering since the warranty expired at 50k in early '05. It currently produces about 195hp and 190ft-lb of torque, but it has been higher during past setups. Currently riding on STI suspension for the winter (AGX struts and springs in storage from the summer) Subaru accessories are great, I have the cargo box, the crossbars and the bike rack. With bike rack, there is no noticeable change in noise or drag, minimal changes with the cargo box. I elected to replace the trans at 200k because the syncronizers were failing (I highly suspect it was due to increased power from my mods). People will also tell you about the head gaskets failing, however this isn't as big a deal as it seems. I pull the spark plug boots every once in a while and if I see oil on them I replace the head gaskets for a whopping $ 20 and an hour of my time every 75-100k. Tires can last 60k or more, just be sure to rotate and cross-rotate them because the stock rear camber is slightly negative so they do wear if you don't rotate. Front brake discs and pads might need more frequent replacement since there is only minimal braking effort from the rear drums, however the original rear drums lasted until 250k. All this service has been performed by me and I can tell you from experience this is one of the easiest cars to work on. Things I have done with this car: -Gone out in virtually every snowstorm to hit in Northern Maryland and never gotten stuck. It even pulled a colleague's pickup when it was stuck in a snow drift. All of that with All-season tires. (I like Continental Pro-Contact, but have used Kumhos a few times when funds were low with good results.) -Driven to Florida and Colorado multiple times (from Maryland) -Some moderate off-roading (with stock suspension) -Hauled 1000lbs of wood in the back and on the roof multiple times. -Towed a loaded U-Haul trailer -Gotten 27+ mpg on the highway (new, stock rating was 25)

Greatest car ever built
I've owned over 25 cars, American muscle through Porsches to Ferraris. I am a car nut. I have used this '02 WRX daily since purchase, (that's about 7 years now), and will never give it up until it is just no longer feasible to repair. The WRX has been so reliable and trouble free that I am amazed it was only $ 22K back in '02. It is almost as quick as any non-turbo Porsche (I had the dealer upgrades installed, bigger turbo and cooler, exhaust and short shift kit all for $ 6K), seats 4, has a huge trunk with fold down arm rest for my skis. Holds the road amazingly well and acceleration is brutal. Seats are the best I ever had. Great road feel. Goes through snow like butter.

WRX AWD 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 4A)
This car just saved my sons life and his 3 friends
I am writing this while sitting in York hospital as my son sits in the ICU. He was a backseat passenger. They are all teenagers and took his friends car , the Subaru, because it handles best and is the most fun....i fact I have learned to be very very grateful for!. Ad teens, rain and a sharp turn , his friend made the mistake of hitting his breaks going into the turn, causing hydroplaning. A suv was coming around the turn , they hit head on/drivers side. All kids had seat belts on. I was called to the scene thinking my son was dead. I got there to see this car crumpled up.but at the inside the car looked fine. The driver came out with only scratches , the passenger, not even a scratch. My son who caught the force of the seatbelt from the high impact, came out with a torn spleen, broken ribs all from the seatbelt. I can explain how bad this wreck was. No one can believe everyone got out and had not even busted faces from airbags..now they all had seatbelt bruising but as a mom. I am so very very very greatful for this car because it saved not only my sons life but all the other kids. Even the surgeon couldn't believe how everyone was unharmed. So yes we spoke of this car over and over at the er, trama and ICU. Thank you for making a car strong enough to hold up to an straight on collision and also keeping them safe inside. Hope Haas

Awesome Little Wagon
I purchased this car because I wanted AWD and a decent amount of carrying capacity while still being small enough to parallel park easily. The TS wagon fit the bill perfectly. As a CA native unaccustomed to the unique demands of winter driving in upstate NY, my Subaru has done a fantastic job of hugging the iciest roads. Curiously, my friends' SUVs often get irretrievably snowed into their parking spots, but my wagon can always get past the snowiest mounds. Reliability is excellent even on long roadtrips - I've driven her from NY to CA and back to MA. I have had no expenses beyond regular maintenance in my 7 years of ownership. After this car, I am absolutely sold on Subarus.

2004 Subaru Impreza
"The best wrx ever!"
I bought this car with 167000 miles. I had to replace the head gaskets which is pretty rare on the turbo cars. Besides that I have had to replace simple things that wear and change the oil. This car runs amazing, the power is there when you need it, it sounds amazing, and it's a monster in the snow. It now has 233000 miles and runs like it's new. I love this car!

2006 Subaru Impreza
"Worst Car I've Ever Had"
I purchased my 2006 Subaru almost two years ago with 140k miles on it. I heard Subaru's are great and long lasting so, I didn't think the higher mileage would be such an issue. I am diligent about oil changes and basic maintenance, however, in not even two years I have had to replace the alternator, water pump, clutch, brakes, rear struts, and front left cv joint. A total of around $ 4,000 for all of it. Still to be repaired is the AC and three issues that are causing the check engine light to come on, one being a misfire. In addition to that, the seats are scratchy so in the summer when I'm wearing shorts the drive is really uncomfortable. My experience with this car has been absolutely horrible and with all the other makes and models available I would not be interested in purchasing a Subaru again.

2007 Subaru Impreza
"Great for a new driver"
I purchased a 2007 Impreza used for my son's first car. Sixteen , new driver , and live in Buffalo . Snow , rain, wind , we have a lot of it , and this little car has stood up to all of it. I like the safety features and the car seems to fits him. It did not break the bank in comparison to the used car in its class. The five speed manual transmission shifts easy and gives the little car some pep. I have owned numerous cars of all types but never a Subaru . I think this is definitely one of my better automobile decisions .
